Two weeks can go by in a flash. If you have a couple of weeks standing between you and your household moving day, then you’ll want to make sure that everything is in order. Below are seven things you can do to ensure that the next two weeks—and the move to follow—go as smoothly as possible.
Verify Travel Arrangements
If a flight, rental car, or other travel arrangements are part of your upcoming relocation, make sure the dates and times are confirmed. When working with a moving company, ensure that these dates are aligned with all parties involved.
Stick to a Careful Packing Plan
As the date of your move arrives, you might be tempted to rush to get the rest of your belongings packed. While it’s a good idea to get as much done as you can, don’t sacrifice important details, like using quality packing materials, following the best packing methods, and labeling your boxes.
Prepare a Do-Not-Move Box
There are items you’ll want to access easily, so keep these stored in a separate box or bin so they do not get mixed in with the rest of your belongings. This might include important paperwork, jewelry, and more.
Pack Your Suitcases
In addition to a general do-not-pack box, you’ll want to have some daily essentials on hand, including a couple of changes of clothes, toiletries, and other necessities. Pack as you would for a weekend getaway, and this will give you some time to settle in before unpacking the rest of your belongings.
Transfer Utilities
You’ll want your home to be comfortable when you arrive. Before your move, contact your local power company to make sure you don’t arrive in the dark. You can also transfer your current internet, cable, and cell phone providers or make arrangements with new ones.
Dispose of Unwanted Items
If you haven’t done so already, go through your home and gather everything you don’t want to take with you. Then, decide what you are going to do with those items. Within the next couple of weeks, you can give things away to friends and family, donate to thrift stores or local charities, or host a garage sale.
Check-In with Your Movers
Are you planning to relocate with the help of a long-distance residential moving company? If you haven’t booked yet, there could still be time, but don’t wait another day! Call to secure a moving quote and set the date for your move. If you have hired a mover, then check in to make sure that everything is on track to go as scheduled.
